Girls Summer Program
Girls Inc. of Central Alabama’s Walker County Center is registering for our educational summer program for girls ages 6–18. Activities include: science, math and technology; health education; economic literacy; culinary arts & nutrition; field trips and much more. The program will take place June 3rd-July 19th from 8AM-5PM weekdays in the Percy Goode Community Center in Jasper. Fees are $225. Garrison appointed to Carbon Hill city council PDF Print E-mail

Before starting their regular council meeting Thursday night, members of the Carbon Hill Council voted unanimously to appoint Sandra Garrison to the Carbon Hill District 1 Council seat that was left vacant earlier this month by the death of her father, Carbon Hill Councilman Billy Wright. Garrison held the District 1 Council seat for four years, from 2008 to 2012, before her father was elected to it in 2012. “I wasn’t going to do this again, but this was my dad’s seat and I wanted to be here for him, and finish up the job for him,” Garrison said.

A report released Friday shows work done by the Alabama Legislature has had a major impact on reducing methamphetamine production in the state including Walker County. The report, which was released by the Subcommittee of the Alabama Drug Abuse Task Force, showed sales of Pseudoephedrine (PSE)/ephedrine have gone down in Alabama, while blocked sales of the drug have gone up. Lawmakers passed legislation in 2012 that made several changes in how Pseudoephedrine — a major component in meth — could be purchased in the state. The drug can now only be purchased in a pharmacy, and someone purchasing the drug must have a valid Alabama driver’s license.

Goodsprings man on the run from police PDF Print E-mail

A Goodsprings man, who fled from local law enforcement Thursday afternoon to allegedly avoid going back to jail, has now received his 15 minutes of fame on Twitter and Facebook after leading authorities on a foot chase through south Walker County. Members of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office are still searching for 63-year-old Stephen Von “Squeezer” Adkins of Goodsprings, who is wanted by Jasper Police Department on outstanding felony warrants.
