The Walker County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation are continuing their investigation into the death of an inmate at Walker County Jail late Monday night. Authorities believe the man’s death may be from natural causes. Trent McCluskey, administrator of the Walker County Jail, said Tuesday afternoon that inmate Eddie Jerome Gann, 52, of Cordova was pronounced dead late Monday night at Walker Baptist Medical Center. Gann was transferred to the hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell in the medical infirmary at the jail.

County Debt refinance to save $3.8M |

The Walker County Commission approved Monday a debt refinance that will save the county $3.8 million over a period of 14 years. “This is a great day for Walker County,” District 4 Commissioner Steven Aderholt said. “Any time a government entity can sit and tell you they have saved a substantial amount of money, that is good.” The debt being refinanced resulted mostly from a $9.4 million loan former commissioners borrowed in 2002. That commission agreed to pay back $27 million and deferred the payment until 2018.

Local effort under way to help Okla.storm survivors |

A 17-year-old survivor of the April 2011 tornadoes is spearheading one of the local efforts to help Oklahoma residents after Monday’s deadly tornadoes. Megan Johnson, who graduates this week from Cordova High School, is rallying her community to prepare care packages that will be delivered to Oklahoma next week. Johnson’s home was among the many in Cordova affected by the tornadoes that hit the city two years ago. “When you watch it on TV and it hasn’t happened to you, you think, ‘Oh, those poor people.’ But when it has happened to you and you’ve seen your house on the hill with all of your stuff exposed, it hurts so much more because you know exactly what those people are going through,” Johnson said.
