History of Daybreak. Daybreak was started by a group of concerned citizens headed by District Attorney Charles Baker to meet the growing needs of domestic violence victims in Walker County. In 1985 The Daybreak Articles of Incorporation were established. In August of 1986 on a meager budget and a rented farm house near town a shelter was opened. Shirley Smith was Daybreak's first employee. Jan Ingle joined the staff in March of 1987 hired by board members Emilie
Johnson and Margaret Dabbs. The next year she became Executive Director of the program. Daybreak was the 9th shelter to be formed in Alabama. Today we have
19 programs in Alabama the newest program is in Marshall county and is under the Direction of the Huntsville program (Hope Place). Daybreak rapidly outgrew the fist building and March of 1990 we were able to purchase a house to relocate the shelter.
Daybreak currently has 5 full time employees.
