AEA official upset about board’s 11 emergency hires
The Walker County Board of Education made 11 emergency hires Thursday, a matter of contention for at least one representative of area school employees. After a called meeting of the school board at which 10 professional positions and one support personnel position were filled as emergency hires, Butch Sargent, the local Uniserve director for the Alabama Education Association, said the board’s move was “100 percent contrary to Alabama law.” Before the meeting began, Superintendent Vonda Beaty said the emergency hires were being made to fill positions left vacant because of recent transfers. Local nonprofits may lose tax-exempt status
More than 50 local nonprofit organizations are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status for failing to file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service for three years. The list, released by the IRS this week, includes such groups as American Legion posts in Arley and Cordova, volunteer fire departments in Argo and Boldo, Citizens for a Drug Free Walker County and the Rotary Club of Jasper Foundation. IRS spokesman Dan Boone said small nonprofits did not have to file with the IRS before 2006. “Prior to then, small charities with receipts under $25,000 were not required to file,” Boone said.
